Sri Lanka announce squad for SL vs BAN 2nd Test

The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo traditionally offers more support to seamers than Galle, and Sri Lanka often field a three-seamer strategy at this venue.

Sri Lanka have announced their squad for the second Test against Bangladesh with a significant change in the lineup. All-rounder Milan Ratnayake, who impressed with both bat and ball in the opening Test at Galle, has been ruled out due to an injury.

His absence is a blow to the hosts, especially given his impactful debut that added balance to the side. To compensate, selectors have brought in left-arm seamer Vishwa Fernando, versatile left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage, and young all-rounder Pawan Rathnayake.

Vishwa Fernando’s recall indicates a shift back to experience in pace-friendly conditions. The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo traditionally offers more support to seamers than Galle, and Sri Lanka often field a three-seamer strategy at this venue.

This means fans could see a pace trio comprising Kasun Rajitha, Asitha Fernando, and the returning Vishwa Fernando. Such a combination offers variety—Kasun’s control and bounce, Asitha’s skiddy pace, and Vishwa’s left-arm angle.

Dunith Wellalage provides a spin option if the pitch shows signs of wear later in the game, and his abilities with the bat could offer depth down the order. Meanwhile, Pawan Rathnayake adds youthful energy and could be groomed for future tours, although it remains to be seen whether he gets a place in the playing XI.
